Commercial roofing – types

What you need to know about commercial roofing?

Simply saying commercial roofing is a group of materials used to cover and protect business, industrial and of course commercial buildings. Unlike residential building which have a more slopped roofs, commercial buildings need a different type of roofing style since they are mainly flat. So for commercial buildings contractors are using materials that are more durable, water resistant but also easy to repair and maintain.

Most commercial roofs are constructed using a technique that implies placing large sheets of material on rooftops and sealing them with strong adhesive to prevent leakage and to remove any unnecessary water from the roof. Therefore, roofing materials used for commercial roofing can be grouped in a couple of categories.

Thermoplastic roofing materials imply using plastic materials and PVC to produce plate that are then installed on buildings and afterwards fused together to create a single, smooth and even surface. They are quite resistant to any kind of weather conditions, chemical reactions and sun exposure. By using hot air welding, seams are created which provides even more strength and durability, eliminating all water coming through the roof.

Synthetic rubber roofing materials use a material called EPDM, like material mentioned earlier EPDM roofing is also made into sheets and placed on flat roofs and bounded to the roof with adhesive and tape. Contractors love EPDM since it can be easily installed and maintained with no problem. It possess high fire and cold resistance and provides protection from UV rays.

Unlike synthetic and thermoplastic roofing which are single ply roofing materials, bitumen based roofing materials are multi ply. So basically several layers are placed on your roof and then bounded with bitumen. Afterwards the surface is covered in granules material such as gravel to provide maximum energy efficiency. Types of bituminous roofing generally include modified bitumen and BUR (or built-up roof). Both are great at protecting the rooftop from collisions, ensuring no damage is done to it, which is extremely important in the case of commercial and industrial buildings.

And unlike cold and artificial roofing materials there is one more for the end – green roofs. They are becoming more and more popular choice for commercial roofing.  Basically, green roofs are first covered with a layer of waterproofing material. Then soil and plants are added, which provide extra insulation and, consequently, reduce energy costs. Green roofs are also an excellent alternative for those who wish to contribute to stopping climate changes – absorbing heat from the air, they reduce the so-called ‘heat island effect’ in urban areas.

Roof problems at Pepino’s

Chef Pepino and owner of Pepino’s is a longtime pro, during his career as a chef he was faced with all sorts of problems, but problems that mainly were related to his line of work. And he managed to successfully deal with them over the years. But few months ago, Pepino’s Italian Restaurant was faced with a problem like never before. One day we have noticed a strange smell coming from the kitchen, since we deal with fresh fruit, vegetables and other ingredients we thought that some of it went bad. After a more thorough inspection we have managed to locate the source of the smell, at first we couldn’t believe. The leak itself wasn’t big in size nor was it interfering with our work but simply we couldn’t allow ourselves to have a leaky ceiling under our heads. We feel the responsibility towards our loyal customers, staff at Pepino’s and strict health regulations.

After closing the restaurant for the day, we all sat down and decided to deal with this new situation, the next day we have started researching the Internet and yellow pages looking effortlessly for a local roofing contractor here in Houston who is skilled and professional enough to deal with our roof leak. To be honest we never dealt with anything like it before, and we thought it would be easy to find a contractor for our problem. Over the next few days we have contacted countless roofing companies in Houston, who all on paper offer fair estimate and great service until the moment they arrive at your property. Maybe, it isn’t nice to say that but it felt like they’ve smelled blood, since with a leaky roof we are violating health regulations. We were almost ready to cave in and hire one of them but then one of our longtime customers suggested Anchor Roofing, Inc. like many times before in that week we were skeptical but still we’ve decided to give them a call. After talking to Victor, CEO of Anchor, we scheduled an inspection. Victor gave us a free roof estimate, something only a few before did. After the inspection, he gave us a relative fair estimate, which made us wonder if we are dreaming. Guys at Anchor surprised us with their progressive mentality, I guess if we go out of business, they would do too at some point.

Italian community in Houston and Texas

Italians in Texas

Most Italians coming to Texas in the seventeenth, eighteenth and early years of nineteenth centuries were mainly adventurers, explorers or missionaries. However in the 1880 and all the way to the 1920, Texas saw an increase of Italians immigrants mainly because of poor social and economic conditions that existed back in their native land. At the end of 1870, there were only 186 Italians residents living in Texas, but by the 1920s there was more than 8000 Italians in Texas.

Their primary goal was to provide a higher standard of living for themselves and their families. Sicilians mostly settled in the lower Brazos valley and on the Galveston County mainland, while Piedmontese built homes in Montague County. While Venetians, Modenese and Piedmonetese worked in rich coal mines at Thurber. Lombards were working on railway construction on either New York, Texas or Mexican Railway, the so called Macaroni Line between Victoria and Rosenberg. Over the years Italian settlements developed in Houston, Galvestone and San Antonio. Few early brave souls set the path while rest of them followed in their footsteps. In later years Italian Texans learned to grow cotton and corn on Texas soil, to speak the English language and to adapt to their new environment. Italian Texans acquired land, established business and started moving around looking for better opportunities. A majority of the earliest migrants were males between the age of fourteen and forty four, after first settling along the river in Brazos valley the Sicilians started moving towards the surrounding communities. Most of the Italians living in Thurber and Victoria County returned to their native land or moved to other places in America when they longer weren’t needed to mine coal or build railroads.

The main pillars of support in Texas were the immigrant church, the Italian language press and the fraternal organization. Parks, airports, streets, and communities bear the names of prominent Italian immigrants, among them Bruni Park in Laredo, named for Antonio Mateo Bruni; Varisco Airport in Bryan, named for Biagio Varisco; Liggio Street in Dickinson and Laneri Street in Dallas; and Varisco and Bruni, Texas. In 1980, 189,799 residents of Texas claimed Italian descent.
